The Begijnhof and My First Kiss in Amsterdam

Historical Treasure

Amsterdam is full of historical treasures, but one of the city’s hidden gems is the Begijnhof. This quiet courtyard—tucked away in the bustling city center—holds a slice of Amsterdam’s history that stretches back centuries.

The Begijnhof: A Peaceful Oasis in the Heart of the City

The Begijnhof was founded in the 14th century as a religious community for Catholic women, the beguines. These women dedicated their lives to caring for the sick and elderly, and the courtyard grew into a serene place of reflection, surrounded by charming houses and the beautiful English Reformed Church.

Sunny Breaks Between Classes

During my university days, the Begijnhof became one of my favorite spots. I would often sit on the courtyard’s benches between classes, basking in the sun and escaping the city’s hustle and bustle. It was here that I once met a fellow student, and in an impulsive moment, shared my first kiss with her in this peaceful place.

Romantic Amsterdam

To me, the Begijnhof remains a special place, filled with memories of youthful moments of adventure and romance. Now, as a canal tour captain, I love sharing these kinds of stories with my guests, showing them that Amsterdam is so much more than the typical tourist highlights.
